Modeling Block Cave Subsidence at the Molycorp, Inc., Questa Mine— A Case Study

چکیده

The evolution of surface subsidence is an important focus of study above Molycorp, Inc.’s newest block cave at the Questa molybdenum mine near Taos, New Mexico. The case study compares mature glory hole subsidence over the Goathill Orebody and subsidence emerging in its earliest stage over the new D Orebody block cave. Subsidence above the D Orebody was first detected in April 2003, 30 months after caving was initiated. Caving propagated to surface through 550 m of overburden at an average rate of 0.21 m per day. At the end of 2004, an average of 100 m of draw over a 1.4-hectare (ha) block produced a nearcircular subsidence basin 5.8 m deep at its center and 90 m offset from the center of the block. Observations to date indicate a cave ratio of 10:1 and a gross cave bulking factor on the order of 10%. Historically, cave-angle projection models have been used to predict subsidence extents for reclamation planning. In light of evolving regulatory concerns, efforts are underway to develop a more accurate subsidence predictor using a three-dimensional (3D) numerical model. Particle Flow Code (PFC3D), a discontinuum “ball” code, was selected for modeling because of its ability to simulate stress fracturing of the rock mass and large-scale mass flow underground and at the surface, which are believed to be the dominant physical phenomena governing the formation of block cave subsidence. Advances simulating subsidence in the Goathill and D orebodies with PFC3D are discussed. Figure 1. Location of Molycorp, Inc., Questa

A Hybrid Fuzzy MCDM Approach to Determine an Optimal Block Size in Open-Pit Mine Modeling: a Case Study

The computer-based 3D modeling of ore bodies is one of the most important steps in the resource estimation, grade determination, and production scheduling of open-pit mines. In the modeling phase, the volume of the orebody model is required to be filled by the blocks and sub-blocks. The determination of Block Size (BS) is important due to the dependence of the geostatistical issues and calculat...

Spatial Analysis and Monitoring of Slope Stability using Persistent Scatterer Tecnique of Sentinel 1 Radar Images, Case Study: Sarcheshmeh Copper Mine

Based on the correlation diagram between the master and slave images (Fig. 5), the pair of appropriate images in terms of the shortest spatial and temporal lines is identified to produce the interferogram. As shown in Fig. 5, the maximum vertical baseline is obtained between -400 and -400. The obtained interferograms indicate the cumulative phase of the study area, which fluctuates between zero...

Use of fly-ash slurry in backfill grouting in coal mines

Cave backfill grouting implies grouting of the caving rock mass prior to it being compacted. The filling materials strengthen the caving rock and support the overlying strata to achieve the purpose of slowing down the surface subsidence. The broken roof will fail and collapse during mining operations performed without appropriate supporting measures being taken. It is difficult to perform conti...

Geohistory Analysis of the Tabas Block (Abdoughi-Parvadeh Basins) as Seen from the Late Triassic through Early Cretaceous Subsidence Curves

The study area is situated in the Middle part of the Tabas Block. It contains outcrops of rocks that formed along longitudinal faults in Early Cimmerian orogenic phase. The basin subsided along these faults from the Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous, which include two sedimentary cycles. A sedimentary cycle, related to Upper Triassic to Bajocian is known as Shemshak group. Another sedimentary c...
